Chieftain News Go back to 06-07 Season Page March 7
March 4 Masconomet continued it winning ways (12-0-3 in last 15 games) with an exciting 5-3 quarterfinal tournament victory over a good N. Reading team at the rocking Chelmsford Forum on Sunday! Once again though, it was not a pretty win as the Chieftains have to get over their tournament jitters and get back to playing their hard nosed and aggressive game of hockey when they face Andover on Wednesday night (3/7/07 at Chelmsford Forum). The offense was lead once again by the sophomores as Chris Kreider returned to score a hat trick (the last goal an open net goal) while assisting on one of Tom Brazil's two goals. The goals were also set up by Keaton Cashin (3 assists) and Jay Nicholls (2 assists). Ryan Dillon continued his confident play in goal, turning away a number of high quality scoring chances especially late in the third period as N. Reading pressed to try and tie the game. Hopefully, the Chieftains realize they can beat anyone and everyone the rest of the way if they play with confidence and without fear of making mistakes! Go Chieftains! Have fun!! Enjoy the moment!!! February 28 A little nervous, a little sloppy, and somewhat tentative in their first tournament game... but the Chieftains played well enough to advance to the next round of the State Tournament with a 4 -0 win over Bishop Fenwick. Masconomet dominated territory play in the first period but failed to generate solid scoring chances and the period ended in a scoreless tie. Ryan Crowther finally got the Chieftains on the board (his first goal) in the second period with a nice low shot from the blue line that deflected off a Bishop Fenwick skate past their "hot" goalie. The Chieftains finally picked-up the play in the third period putting in three goals to seal the game. Keaton Cashin scored on a power play with a nice low wrist shot to the far corner. The goal excited the big crowd and the team as goals by Ryan Dooley (his first goal) and Jay Nicholls soon followed. Assists on the evening went to Cam Greely, Jay Nicholls, Tom Brazil, Andrew Roach, and Anthony DiBenedetto. Earning his fifth shutout of the season, Ryan Dillon made some very nice saves on a limited number of Bishop Fenwick scoring chances. The next game is Sunday, March 4th (4:30pm) at the Chelmsford Forum against North Reading (a 3-2 winner over Triton tonight). Hopefully the jitters were expelled today and the Chieftains get back to their fast paced, hard nosed style of game. Nice job Chieftains - let's keep in going! February 24
February 23 The Chieftains ended the season strong with a dominating team victory over Cambridge by a score of 7-2. Danny Soffron got the start and win in goal turning away a number of Cambridge chances. The team offense was buzzing though as 11 different players got points in the game. Goals were scored by Michael DiBacco (2), Andrew Roach (2 - his first varsity goals), Richard Frizzell, Anthony DiBenedetto, and Keaton Cashin. Freshman Ryan Dooley lead the assist parade with 4 in the game followed by Andy DiVenuti (2), Anthony DiBenedetto (2), Andrew Roach, Justin Falzone, Brett Comeford, Derek Hamel and of course Jay Nicholls. Masconomet finished the regular season with an impressive record of of 14-3-3 and the Cape Ann League Title! They have not lost in there last 13 games (10-0-3). The Chieftains should have a lot of confidence going into the tournament but they will have to work every minute of every game to continue their success in postseason play. February 21 Playing its third game in as many days, a tired Chieftain team gutted out a comeback 3-3 tie against a tough North Reading team. AJ Rothwell got the scoring going followed by third period goals from Anthony DiBenedetto (his first varsity goal!) and Keaton Cashin. Assists were made by Nick Bartlett, Andrew Roach (his first varsity point), and Jay Nicholls. Ryan Dillon once again was very strong in net turning away a number of hard shots to help the Chieftains gain a point in the overall Division 2 standings. Coach Blackwell received the Cape Ann League title plaque tonight in the CAL conference meeting. Great job Chieftains.... but the work has just begun! February 20 The Chieftains kept up their winning ways today with a 4-1 victory over non-league opponent Everett. After falling behind, Masconomet ripped of 4 straight goals and got solid goaltending from Dylan Wiberg to earn another big two points. Keaton Cashin, Chris Kreider, Jay Nicholls, Tom Brazil, Danny McIllvane, Nick Bartlett and Ryan Crowther all picked up points on the day. February 19 Masconomet clinched sole possession of first place in the Cape Ann League today with an exciting come from behind 4-3 victory over a desperate Wilmington team. With the win, the Chieftains eliminated Wilmington (needing a win) from postseason tournament play! Wilmington came out playing hard and Masconomet trailed the entire game until Tom Brazil electrified the Chieftain fans with the tieing goal with only 30 seconds left in the game! Chris Kreider than took the ensuing faceoff straight down the middle for the game winner just a few seconds later! Wow - what an great comeback! Along with Brazil and Kreider, the Chieftains goals were scored by Andrew Panella and Cam Greeley. Keaton Cashin lead the assists with 2 along with AJ Rothwell and freshmen Ryan Dooley who saw his first varsity game action today. From last place to first place ... what a difference a year makes! Hopefully the Chieftains can remain focused for the final three regular season games this week against tough opponents. Every point counts in the seeding for the tournament. February 17 The Masconomet Chieftains guaranteed themselves at least a tie for the Cape Ann League title today with a hard fought 2-1 victory over North Andover. Ryan Dillon was outstanding in goal leading the team to a big victory in front of the excited fans on Senior Day and Masco Youth Hockey Day! Masconomet jumped out to a one nothing lead on a goal by senior Justin Falzone assisted by Brett Comeford and Richard Frizzell. The score remained 1-0 until midway through the third period when North Andover tied it on a rebound after a nice clear break-in save by Dillon. The Chieftains came roaring back though with the winning goal minutes later as Tom Brazil scored on a wrist shot with Jay Nicholls sacrificing his body in front of the net to screen the North Andover goalie. Nicholls picked up the assist along with Chris Kreider. The Masconomet defense worked hard the rest of the game to keep the pressing North Andover offense off the score board for the BIG WIN! Congratulations to Coach Blackwell, Coach DiFiore, Coach Jackson and all of the players. The Chieftains now have to regroup and focus on their remaining games of the season. They need one more point in their remaining two Cape Ann League games to win the league title outright and every point is important in order to improve their tournament seeding.
February 13 The JV team keeps on winning with two big wins over Peabody and Central Catholic.
With only one
loss in the Greater Boston League before playing the JV Chieftains,
Peabody could not keep up with Masco going down by a score of
6-3. Masconomet's goals were scored by Andrew Roach (2), Colin
Shepard, Nick Simonetti, Cam Nekoroski and Stefan Surette.
There were plenty of assists as well going to Charlie Gendron (2),
Anthony DiBenedetto (2), Nate Adams-Cook, Cam Nekoroski, Stefan
Surette, Rob Grant, Ryan Dooley, Brendan Dahlgren, and Andrew Roach.
With the
two wins the JV Chieftains are undefeated with a record of
16-0-1. Congratulations to Coach Jackson and all the players ! February 10 After a slow start on Saturday, the Chieftains beat Amesbury by a score of 5-2 for their 10th win of the season. AJ Rothwell got the assist on Mazzola's goal while Keaton Cashin, Tom Brazil, Chris Kreider, and Jay Nicholls also earned a point each with an assist.
